The goal of this elective is to provide students with an introduction to the practice of simulation in medical education through the use of didactics, literature review, hands-on simulations, and the production of scholarship.

Course Description:

This course offers an introduction to the research topics currently being investigated by nursing and interdisciplinary sciences graduate faculty. In addition, students receive individualized instruction from an independent investigator in a research program or laboratory. Students are expected to master at least one research-related technique and become familiar with the various activities expected of an independently-funded investigator.

Mentee Objectives:

  1. Identify and apply a conceptual framework after comprehensive review of the literature on the utility of program evaluation models for graduate medical education.
  2. Conduct descriptive and analytic statistics to assess students’ experience with simulation-based education using existing de-identified data.
  3. Generate and interpret the findings, and develop an abstract to be submitted for 2020 AU Research Day.

Course Description:  

The goal of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the practice of simulation in health professions education. Students will examine the theoretical underpinnings of educational simulation, apply best practices to case design, program simulation technologies, design a high-quality assessment instrument, and conduct a simulation session and corresponding debriefing.

Teaching with Simulation in Medical Education

  • This course teaches the fundamentals of simulation that includes background and purpose behind simulation specifically as it relates to pre-briefing, case development and delivery, debriefing and assessment.

Developing a Medical Simulation Case

  • This course guides the learner through the purpose and design of a simulation case. The learner will utilize the MCG Educational Simulation Case Template to develop a case, with the goal of understanding the educational and operational considerations when developing a simulation case. 

Running a Medical Simulation

  • This course will be an introduction to the functions of the simulator, the basics of programming the mannequin and hands-on experience in running a medical simulation. The learners will walk away with the confidence in being able to run a medical simulation.

Debriefing in Medical Simulation

  • This course teaches the goals, educational construct, theory and practical applications of debriefing in the simulated setting. Learners will be able to practice basic debriefing techniques and learn about the debriefing tool utilized by MCG Educational Simulation.

Assessment and Evaluation in Medical Education

  • This course teaches how to individual assessments and program evaluations can be utilized with simulation and clinical skills learning. Designed for faculty who create individual assessments and program evaluations for their learners at any level.
